Volunteering
As a citizen, I believe that we all have the responsibility to give back to this world as much as it has given us, and to make this world a better place. As a result, I have been involved in many different volunteer opportunities: fighting hunger,
cancer, AIDS, or just serving the community in general through political volunteering
and community service.
- Jewish Relief Agency
– hundreds of volunteers gather monthly to feed thousands of hungry families
in the Philadelphia area.
- American Cancer Society
- Fighting cancer since 1946. I participate in its annual bike-a-thon during which
they raised 1.8 million dollars.
- Reach Out – community service group at Lower Merion High School.
-
Lower Merion Interact – community service group
- Student Global AIDS Campaign & annual AIDS walk.
- Lois Murphy (PA-6) for Congress Campaign - I was a volunteer coordinator during the summer of 2006 and the couple months leading up to election day in November. I made countless phone calls, entered data, went canvasing, recruited volunteers, and taught volunteers to do the same.
- Alyn Hospital - Since 1932, Alyn Hospital, a pediatric and adolescent rehabilitaion center, has been helping children with disabilities. It is one of the "world's leading specialists in the active and intensive rehabilitation of infants, children and adolescents affiliated with a broad range of physical disabilities."
We (TRY 2008) raised over $1,000 for Alyn Hospital in just a couple weeks.
- Table to Table - A non-profit
organization which "rescues excess, unserved food that would otherwise be destroyed
from catered events, bakeries, army bases, perishable food manufacturers, farmers
and packinghouses.... [They] then transport the food to non-profit organizations
throughout Israel serving people in need."
- Girl Scouts of America - I have been an active member of Girl Scouts in my troop 71104 since second grade when I began Brownies. Since then, we have done countless trips, community service activities, cookie sales, camping trips, and more. I just received my
Gold Award,
which is the highest level of achievement in Girl Scouts, after completing my 65-hour community service project. Although I may not continue Girl Scouts in college, I look forward to sewing on patches and badges onto my little sister Rachel's vest when she is old enough to join.
