Medicine

Researching AMD at Penn.

I want to go into medicine because it would allow me to use my love of science to help others on a daily basis. I also am fascinated by medicine becaue it is one field where there will always be more to learn. For every treatment we find, there is always a faster, safer, cheaper, more effective, and easier treatmant to discover. Medicine is a fascinating world where every answer leads to more questions, and every question leads to more discoveries. I have/am taking every science/medicine related courses at Lower Merion High School that I can fit into my schedule, including AP chemistry,  AP Physics Mechanics, Psychology H, Anatomy & Physiology H, Genetics H, and Biology H. Despite being vegetarian, I love dissecting in my Anatomy class. I also took Neurobiology and Marine Biology at Harvard Summer School in Summer 2007, and I watched a C-section performed when my sister was born in 2006. I look forward to pursuing this field further after high school, and to be able to apply my knowledge to improve people's lives.

Retina staining I did of the retina of a genetically modified mouse at Penn for AMD research.

This past summer, I researched Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) internship at the University of Pennsylvannia using mouse models, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and cultures. AMD is the most common cause of central vision loss in the United States, and the older you are, the higher your risk of getting it is. I absolutely love working in the lab, and the thought that my cultures could possibly contain a clue to curing AMD was thrilling. It was difficult to go back to my school's plastic pipettes after having used so much more efficient and incredible tools in the lab.
